Vacationing in Puerto Rico With Teens

Itinerary – Where We Stayed – Places to Eat

Pretty beaches, fun activities, good food and historical sites make Puerto Rico a vacation choice perfect for families.

We spent five days on the island, and here’s our “teen kids, family friendly” itinerary.

Our first full day in Puerto Rico was a pool and beach day. Planning a chill day after traveling helps us switch into vacation mode. It also gives us a chance to check out the amenities where we’re staying.

For dinner we ate at Don Pepe,  a local Puerto Rican restaurant. I had this chicken fried rice dish with plantains and it was the perfect dinner for our first full day on the island.

The next day we went into the city. We walked the streets of San Juan and visited Castillo San Felipe del Morro.

The architecture and streets are beautiful. Of course we had to take photos with the I Heart PR sign.

Next up was our day of adventure. We started with ATV riding at Carabali Rainforest Adventure Park.

This was fun! It was a rainy morning, so thankfully we had on comfy athletic wear that we didn’t mind getting dirty or wet. Keep in mind this is an adventure, so dress accordingly :-). After UTVing we hiked in El Yunque. For El Yunque our Vrbo host recommended we visit on our own versus a tour, since we wanted to do an easy trail. We did the Angelito trail and it was perfect. The hike was fairly easy and the river at the base was lovely.

Afterwards we ate burgers and had fruity drinks for dinner at the Wyndham Grand next door.

The next morning we woke up early to get ready for our day trip to Icacos Island. We did this tour with East Island Excursions and I highly recommend. My girls LOVED swimming in the vibrant water.

We began our last day on the island so we sitting by the ocean and planning our next excursion. We ate at  La Parrilla and this was our favorite meal of the trip.

These empanadas were so. good!

Where Our Family of Five Stayed in Puerto Rico:

This two bedroom, two bath VRBO listing was our home on the island. It’s on the grounds of the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort  granting us access to the hotel restaurants for evenings we didn’t feel like venturing out.

These villas have pools separate from the resort next door, and they were never crowded. My girls had fun racing in the pools and playing in the ocean. It truly was the best of all worlds.

Why We Chose Rio Mar Versus San Juan

Rio Mar is close to El Yunque rainforest, as well as restaurants and stores, but it’s more laid back than San Juan. We also loved the beaches.

I hope this helps you plan a fun family vacation!
