A working mom summer plans usually focus on camps, daycare schedules and maybe a vacation or two.

But, you don’t have to miss all of the fun stuff that happens daily because you’re going to the office. There are simple things you can do with the family after work.

Here are three summer fun ideas great for evenings that require little to no preparation, are affordable and can be done at home.

Sidewalk Chalk Contest. Creativity + friendly competition is the perfect recipe for an evening of laughs. Designate drawing areas in the driveway, set the timer for 15 minutes and see who comes up with the most creative piece. This is also a great idea if you have neighborhood friends, because there is no limit on participants and sidewalk chalk is pretty inexpensive. Plus, when you’re done you can hose off the driveway and have a clean slate for the next day. You can make this more challenging by creating themes or by doing a series of drawings.

Water is your friend. The easiest way to enjoy water is to turn on the sprinklers and let the kids use their imagination. If you don’t have a sprinkler you can be deemed “Hose Queen” and it’s your job to use the water hose to spray everyone. Set limits on where they can run (no roads, streets, neighbor yards, etc.) and let the laughter begin. If you want a water game that is a little more organized, try the over-under sponge game. This is always a winner with kids AND adults.

Make smores. All you need is chocolate, marshmallows, graham crackers and a fire. I love this idea because it encourages uninterrupted conversation and is sure to be a great summer memory. The other thing about smores is that they make the perfect dessert to “wow up” a regular dinner, especially if you eat outside.
